APHA WILL be honoring some of the nation's most outstanding health workers and public health leaders during the Association's 138th Annual Meeting in November.
More than a dozen honorees have been chosen by the Association as the winners of its 2010 awards, which will be celebrated at the Denver meeting. The recipients, who were chosen in honor of their commitment and service to public health, represent a range of fields and occupations, including community workers, health administrators and elected officials.

The 2010 winners of APHAs awards are:
* APHA Award for Excellence: Shu-Hong Zhu, PhD, professor of family and preventive medicine, University of California at San Diego;
* APHA Executive Director Citation: Lyndon Haviland, DrPH, MPH, consultant, Strategic Philanthropy and Public Health Communications;
* APHA Presidential Citation: Robert Garcia, JD, president and counsel, the City Project, Los Angeles;
* APHA Distinguished Public Health Legislators of the Year: U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif.;
* David P. Rall Award for Advocacy in Public Health: Ursula E. Bauer, PhD, MPH, director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;
* Helen Rodriguez-Trias Social Justice Award: Glenn Flores, MD, FAAP, professor of pediatrics and public health, director of the Division of General Pediatrics, and director of the Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern and Children's Medical Center, Dallas;
* Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award: Carlos E. Rodriguez-Diaz, PhD, MPHE, CHES, research fellow and instructor at the Division of Global Health Research, School of Public Health, at the Center for Evaluation and Sociomedical Research, University of Puerto Kico;
* Martha May Eliot Award: Milton Kotelchuck, PhD, MPH, visiting professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and senior researcher in maternal and child health at the Center for Child and Adolescent Health Policy, MassachuI setts General Hospital;

* Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for Creative Public Health Work: Harvey R. Crowder, DVM, MS, public health administrator, Walla Walla County Health Department, Washington;
* Sedgwick Memorial Medal: William Schaffner, MD, professor of infectious diseases and chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine;
* Sidel-Levy Award for Peace: Charlotte S. Phillips, MD, co& founder and chair of Brooklyn for Peace; and
* Student Assembly Public Health Mentoring Award: Connie Kohler, DrPH, professor of health behavior at the School of Public Health, University of Alabama.
Except for the Martha May Eliot Award, the winners of the 2010 APHA awards will be honored Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m., during a ceremony at the Annual Meeting. The Eliot award will be presented earlier in the day Tuesday during a Maternal and Child Health Section luncheon.
