The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has urged the government to prohibit teenagers from working in a number of additional Jobs, including construction, garbage collection and roofing. The Labor Department says it is studying the report.
The report says the on-the-job injury rate for teenagers is almost twice as high as for adults, even though teenagers are barred from many hazardous jobs. Children's advocates say one study found that 40% of teenagers who died on the job were doing work that is prohibited by law.
However, government statistics show about three-fourths of deaths of workers under age 15 occur in agriculture, and most of those who die are working in businesses owned by their families.
